The supreme court has upheld the victory of Kayode Fayemi in last year’s governorship election. At its sitting on Friday, the court dismissed the appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Kolapo Olusola, its governorship candidate, challenging Fayemi’s victory.
The Independent National Electoral Commission had declared Fayemi winner of the election. But Olusola challenged his victory at the tribunal, alleging that the election was fraught with irregularities.
The tribunal, however, struck out his case and ruled that Fayemi was credibly elected governor of the state. It held the PDP could not substantiate its allegations with credible evidence.
The court of appeal sitting in Abuja also delivered a similar ruling after the case was filed before it. The PDP candidate then proceeded to the supreme court, asking it to nullify the judgments given by the tribunal and the appellate court in Fayemi’s favour.
A five-man panel of the apex court, however, dismissed the appeal on the ground that it lacked merit. The panel led by Tanko Muhammad, acting chief justice of Nigeria, subsequently ruled that Fayemi was validly elected
