Not many people know that Evangelist Ebenezer Obey and Globacom Founder, Otunba Mike Adenuga are close. We can tell you that for free. They are very, very close. On a weekly basis, both touch base. It is either Baba Obey calls Mike Adenuga up to ask for him, or the Ijebu Igbo billionaire will call Chief Commander up to say hello.
It is a relationship that has been on since the early 80s. It started off with Mike Adenuga’s love for Obey’s evergreen songs since his younger days in Ibadan and when he lived in the U.S. Mike Adenuga grew up in Ibadan and in his younger days, he grew up to love Ebenezer Obey and King Sunny Ade’s music. And he has kept that relationship aglow over the years.
That is why there is nothing Glo does that does not involve Obey & Sunny Ade. That is the standing instruction. That is why they usually feature in all the major Glo campaigns. Recently, when Ebenezer Obey clocked 80, he granted so many Birthday interviews wherein, he mentioned and appreciated Mike Adenuga’s support for him over the years.
He described him as Asore ma se ika. To further show Ebenezer Obey love, Mike Adenuga placed birthday congratulatory adverts for Obey in newspapers on his birthday on 4th April, 2022. He took out double spread in Nigerian Tribune, Punch and a few others, where he eulogised Ebenezer Obey to high heavens. He loves Baba Obey. Baba Obey also loves him. He also respects and appreciates Big Mike.
So appreciative is he of Mike Adenuga that he rates him high on the list of those he likes. City People can authoritatively reveal that apart from God and his late mum, Mike Adenuga is one person he prays for every morning when he wakes up. This is because Mike Adenuga has been there for him, at critical moments of his life. Mike has over the years been super supportive of Baba Obey. During his last birthday festivity, Baba Obey revealed that apart from God, it was the support he received from Mike Adenuga that made him survive the surgery he had abroad, which made him spend a fortune on his health. That is why he calls Mike Asore Ma Seka.
Apart from the love & respect he has for Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey, he also loves his music, especially his evergreen songs. So in love is Mike with Obey’s music that he occasionally invites him to play for him and his friends whenever he wants.
What usually happens is that whenever Mike and his circle of friends want to listen to Obey, live, they would invite him to Mike’s house for him to thrill them with some of his special numbers, after which he will be handsomely rewarded.
Many still can’t forget his special composition for Mike Adenuga’s 60th birthday. Although the CD was made specifically for Mike to give out to his friends as a souvenir, a few people dubbed the songs and it went viral. It was a double CD album that is like a musical biography of Mike Adenuga. He specifically asked Obey to do a double CD album for him, although Obey had wanted to do a 4-in-1 CD album for him. Based on the enormous legwork and research done towards the making of the album, Baba Obey wanted to produce a 4-in-1 CD album in Mike’s honour, but Mike chose the 2-in-1 instead.
That Obey loves Mike so much can be seen at the reception of his Lagos house where he has on display photos and memorabilia of him & Mike Adenuga.
