The Nigerian hip hop scene has witnessed the rise and fall of numerous talented artists whose contributions have significantly shaped the genre. These artists either paved the way for other hip-hop or left a void in the industry due to reduced activity, tragic deaths, or shifting focus to other genres.
Below, City People’s BENPRINCE EZEH brings you an unofficial list of 50 Nigerian hip-hop stars, both pioneers and notable artists, whose influence is missed or who have left a significant mark on the industry
EEDRIS ABDULKAREEM
Eedris Turayo Abdulkareem Ajenifuja is 50. He was born 24 December 1974), popularly known as Eedris Abdulkareem, a singer and rapper and former member of The Remedies, known for his controversial hit “Jaga Jaga.” While still occasionally active, his prominence has waned.
He is one of the pioneers of Nigerian hip hop and he is regarded as one of the most influential Nigerian rappers of all time.
He was born in a polygamous family in Kano, Nigeria. His father was from Ilesha in Osun State, and his mother was from Ogun State, all in the south western part of Nigeria, but he adopted Kano State as his state of origin. He lost his father at the age of two and eight of his elder siblings as time went by.
In 2000, Abdulkareem was among the personalities voted for by the Nigerian public to carry the Olympic torch in a relay through the country.
In June 2024, Eedris Addulkareem was in the limelight after he released a new song titled “Emi Lokan”. In the song, he was critical of the current and past administrations of Bola Tinubu and Mohammed Buhari respectively following the high cost of living as well as what he perceived as “hypocrisy” of popular religious leader EA Adeboye for not speaking out
RUGGEDMAN
Michael Ugochukwu Stephens, known professionally as Ruggedman, is a rapper from Ohafia, Abia State, Southeastern region of Nigerin. A trailblazer in Nigerian rap, known for tracks like “Baraje.” He has shifted focus to activism and other ventures.
MODENINE
Renowned for his lyrical depth and multiple-time winner of the “Lyricist on the Roll” award. He has been less active in recent years.
DA GRIN
Oladapo Olaitan Olaonipekun, also known as Dagrin (25 October 1984 – 22 April 2010), was a Yoruba rapper whose career was cut short by a fatal car accident in 2010. He remains a significant influence in the genre.
A film of his life entitled Ghetto Dreamz was produced in April 2011. He is recognized for paving the way for indigenous rap in Nigeria. He is widely considered one of the greatest Nigerian rappers of all time
SKY B
Gained fame in the mid-2000s with hits like “Ma Bebe.” He reportedly passed away in 2019.
BIGLO
A pioneer in the Nigerian hip hop scene, known for the hit “Delicious” with 2Shotz. He passed away in December 2020 due to health complications.
2Shotz: Once a dominant force in Nigerian hip hop, known for collaborations and solo hits. He has since retired from music and relocated abroad.
LORD OF AJASA
Pioneered Yoruba rap in Nigeria with hits like “Le Fenu So.” He has been relatively inactive in the music scene.
DURELLA
Once known as the “King of the Zanga,” he has been absent from the music industry for years.
TERRY THA RAPMAN
A veteran in the Nigerian rap scene, his recent releases have been sparse.
FREESTYLE
Was the stage name of Mfon Essien, a member of the Nigerian hip-hop group Trybesmen, which was a pioneer of hip hop in Nigeria, and their hits included “Trybal Marks” and “Shake Bodi”. The group’s first album, L.A.G Style Volume 1., was released in 1999.
ID CABASA
Olumide Ogunade professionally known as ID Cabasa is a Nigerian music producer and singer. He is the founder of Coded Tunes, the record label that signed Olamide, 9ice, 2Shotz, Reminisce, Lord of Ajasa, Ajayi Brovas, 2Phat, Seriki and Banky W.
9ICE
Akande Abolore Adegbola Alexander Ajifolajifaola (born Abolore Adegbola Akande), better known as 9ice (born 17 January 1980), is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and dancer. He is known for his powerful use of the Yoruba language in his music as well as his proverbial lyrics and unique style of delivery.
In 1996, 9ice recorded his first demo, titled “Risi de Alagbaja”, but it was not until 2000 that he released his first official solo song, “Little Money”.
In 2008, 9ice released the single “Gongo Aso”. With the song gaining popularity, 9ice was asked to perform at the Nelson Mandela 90th Birthday Tribute concert in London in June 2008. He went on to win the Best Hip Hop Artist of the Year at the MTV Africa Music Awards.
“Gongo Aso” won him four further awards at the 2009 edition of the Hip Hop World Awards held at the International Conference Centre, Abuja: Album of the Year, Artiste of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Rap in Pop Album.
ELDEE
Born Lanre Dabiri on May 23, 1977, in Kaduna, Nigeria, is a renowned Nigerian-American rapper, singer, and record producer. He is celebrated as one of the pioneers of the Afrobeats music genre, significantly influencing its evolution and global reach.
ELDee attended Command Children School in Kaduna and later moved to Lagos for higher education. He earned a master’s degree in Architecture from the University of Lagos in 2001.
In 1998, eLDee co-founded the band Trybesmen, alongside rappers’ KB and Freestyle. The group played a pivotal role in popularizing the fusion of hip-hop, highlife, pop, and traditional Afrobeat music, laying the foundation for the Afrobeats genre.
After relocating to the United States in 2002, eLDee embarked on a successful solo career.
Throughout his career, eLDee has collaborated with various artists and has been instrumental in shaping the Nigerian music industry.
ELDee is married to Dolapo Latinwo-Bello, and they have two daughters, Temi and Toke. He has been based in Atlanta, USA, since 2002.
In recent years, eLDee has transitioned into real estate coaching, helping individuals achieve financial freedom through real estate investments. He actively shares insights and training on his social media platforms.
OLU MAINTAIN
Olu Maintain’s real name is Olumide Edwards Adegbulu. He was born September 1976 in Lagos. He is a prominent Nigerian singer and songwriter. He co-founded the musical group Maintain with his cousin, Tolu Ogunniyi, and Adeboye Bammeke (Big Bamo). The group released six albums between 1998 and 2004, featuring hits like “I Catch Cold,” “Domitila,” and “Alo.” They disbanded in 2004.
Olu Maintain rose to prominence in May 2007 with his debut studio album, “Yahooze,” which includes the hit single “Yahooze.” The song, which celebrates internet fraud and lavish spending, was named Hottest Single of the Year at the Nigeria Entertainment Awards. He performed “Yahooze” at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 2008, where he brought former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell on stage.
In 2012, he released the single “Nawti,” which earned the Nigeria Entertainment Awards for Best Video of the Year and Best Reggae/Dancehall Video of the Year at the Nigeria Music Video Awards. In January 2013, he released two songs, “Hypnotize Me,” featuring 50 Cent and Olivia, and “Oya Dancia,” featuring Fatman Scoop.
WEIRD MC
She is well known as Weird MC but her real name is Adesola Adesimbo Idowu. She was born July 9, 1970, in England, is a Nigerian-British rapper, songwriter, and producer. She is renowned for her unique blend of English and Yoruba lyrics, making her one of Africa’s most prominent female rappers.
Raised in a conservative Nigerian family, Weird MC attended Maryland Comprehensive Secondary School in Lagos, where she formed the hip-hop group “Weirdos” with her friends. Despite their popularity, the group disbanded without securing a record deal. She later enrolled at Ogun State University to study Law but left after a year to pursue her music career, eventually obtaining a qualification in Music Technology.
In 1992, Weird MC released the single “I Wanna Make You Jack/Let’s Get Wet,” which received positive reviews and topped the Choice FM charts. She returned to Nigeria in 1996 and released her debut album, “Simply Weird,” blending American hip-hop with Afrobeat. The album featured the self-produced single “Allen Avenue,” making her the first Nigerian artist to release a song via a music video. Although the album was ahead of its time, it earned her the first AMEN award for Best Hip Hop Album.
In 2006, she released her second album, “After Da Storm,” featuring the hit single “Ijoya,” produced by Don Jazzy and JJC. The song was a massive success, earning her an AMEN award for Most Pop Song and a Channel O Music Video Award for Best Special Effect.

Olubankole Wellington (born 27 March 1981, popularly known by his stage name Banky W and credited in film as Banky Wellington, is a Nigerian-American singer, rapper, actor, entrepreneur and politician.
Olubankole Wellington was born in the United States on 27 March 1981 to Nigerian parents. His family returned to Nigeria when he was five years old. He began singing at a young age in his church choir. His ethnicity is Yoruba.
TONY TETUILA
Anthony Olanrewaju Awotoye, better known as Tony Tetuila, also regarded as the golden father of Afrobeats is an artist from Nigeria. He was born in 1974. He is a native of Oro, Kwara State.
He was a member of the now-defunct hip-hop group of The Remedies (along with Eedris Abdulkareem and Eddy Montana). Tony Tetuila split from the group and became successful as a solo artist. He is best known for his hit song My Car, as well as Nigeria’s first-ever diss track, Omode Meta.
STYL-PLUS
Is a Nigerian R&B group known for their soulful and melodic music. The group was formed in the early 2000s and quickly rose to prominence in the Nigerian music scene with their unique blend of contemporary R&B and Afrobeat influences. Styl-Plus became famous for their harmonious vocals, smooth ballads, and catchy tunes.
Their breakthrough hit was “Imagine That”, which gained massive popularity in Nigeria and other parts of Africa. The group is known for their heartfelt lyrics, often focusing on love, relationships, and personal reflections.
Styl-Plus initially consisted of four members: Shifi, Yemi, Zeal, and Tunde. Over time, there were some lineup changes, but their signature sound remained. Despite some periods of inactivity, Styl-Plus is still recognized as one of the most successful and influential R&B groups in Nigerian music history.

Born Oladipupo Olabode Oladimeji, Oladips was a prominent rapper known for his lyrical prowess. He passed away at the age of 28.
DABLIXX OSHA
A Nigerian rapper recognized for his trap-infused style, Dablixx Osha passed away on November 7, 2022, at the age of 27.
TIDINZ
Known for his energetic delivery and indigenous rap style, Tidinz died on October 9, 2022, at the age of 26.
SASHA P
One of Nigeria’s foremost female rappers, known as the “First Lady of Nigerian Hip Hop.” She has taken a hiatus from music.
KEL
A female rapper who gained attention with her debut album “The Investment.” She has since stepped back from the music industry.
ILLBLISS
Also known as Oga Boss, a rapper and label executive. While still involved in music, his releases have become infrequent.

EDDY REMEDY
Born Edward Ashiedu Brown, is a Nigerian musician and songwriter renowned for his contributions to the Nigerian hip-hop scene. He gained prominence in the late 1990s as a member of the pioneering group The Remedies, alongside Eedris Abdulkareem and Tony Tetuila. The group is credited with popularizing Nigerian hip-hop and introducing indigenous languages into the genre.
After The Remedies disbanded, Eddy Remedy embarked on a solo career, releasing his debut album “Eddy na Eddy” in 2002 under Kennis Music. The album featured popular tracks such as “Wa Gba Control” and “Aye mi Temi.”
In recent years, Eddy Remedy has been less active in the music industry. He has occasionally spoken out about his experiences with former group members, including Eedris Abdulkareem. AJAYI BROVAS
