My plan was actually to get a job without Aunty Florence knowing. She also leaves very early for work like her husband. If I leave home after they’re gone and I could return home before they’re back, then I should be able to save some money to get rid of this damned pregnancy in my womb. I had already added weight. My tummy was bulging, but people didn’t notice because I was wearing tights that kept my tummy looking normal. But, soon, I knew those tights would no longer be able to conceal the fact that I was pregnant and everyone except Aunty Florence would start wondering what was wrong with me. And I was running out of time. I wasn’t prepared to let me Aunty Florence use me as her own bait to conceive, I had to take my own destiny into my own hands and decide which path was best for me.
Two days after, I heard someone knocking lightly on our window around noon. It was Stanley. I came out to meet him and found he was excited about something.
“Pretty Rosie, how are you doing?” he greeted with a huge smile on his face. He had renamed me Pretty Rosie, that’s what he’d been calling me and I had no objections to it.
“I’m doing fine, thank you,” I responded. “You seem excited this afternoon, what is it?”
“Well, you too will soon join in the excitement, now hues what?” he said.
In my mind, I was wondering, could he have……? “Please, Stanley, what is it?”
He beamed at me with another big smile. “I have gotten a job for you!”
I was excited. Almost couldn’t believe my ears. At first, I thought he was merely pulling my legs but looking at the seriousness on his face, I realised he wasn’t.
“Are you serious? Please, don’t tell me you’re joking,” I begged him.
“Of course, I’m not,” he assured me.
“So, what kind of job are we talking about here?” I asked him, desperate for answers.
“It’s a salesgirl job,” he replied. “There is a super marker not too far from here, my friend’s mum owns it. I spoke to her and luckily for you, she said they actually need a bright young girl right n9ow so she said I should bring you to her.”
“When am I supposed to resume and close for the day?” I asked him, praying the time frame would make it easy for me to take the job.
“Well, I know they open by 8 o’clock in the morning but I’m not sure about when you can close for the day. You can discuss that with her when you get there.”
“You know I told you I don’t want my Aunty to know that I’m doing any work, she won’t allow it,” I confided in him.
“But that’s going to be difficult, don’t you think?” Stanley retorted, a puzzled look on his face. “How will you be working and she won’t know?”
“She leaves home early for work every morning, before seven, she’s out of the house. I plan to come back before she returns in the evening around 6 pm to start preparing food. My only fear is that the kind of job she does sometimes allows her to stay away from work for days. Sometimes she doesn’t leave early or returns home very early.”
Stanley shook his head slowly as he gazed deeply into my eyes. “See, Rosie, I don’t know how you’re going to do it, but believe me, it’s going to be hard to conceal the job from your Aunty,” he said to me.
He made sense. It would be difficult to hide the fact that I work from Aunty Florence, but I have got to do something about my situation. I can’t just give up and watch my life go up in flames just because someone wants to benefit from my predicament.
He took me to the woman who owns the supermarket and she immediately liked me. She asked where I live and I told her I lived in the same house as Stanley. She seemed comfortable with that. She engaged me for some minutes and said she was impressed, that I appeared to be a bright young lady. And she gave me the job. It turned out she had other girls working for her. It was a big supermarket, one sales girl couldn’t be enough. There were a couple of others but still, because of the size of the supermarket, a lot of items were often missing. People come in, pretend they are trying to buy stuff and end up stealing from the supermarket. There was also a rotational or shift arrangement in place because they actually closed late in the evening. I explained to the woman that I needed to close early to prepare food for the family so she placed me on 4.30 pm closing time. That was just perfect for me. The salary was good enough. From my calculations, I needed just two salaries to be able to afford D&C. But how I was going to do months of work successfully without being found out was going to be a miracle and I knew so too.
And I resumed two days after my meeting with Mummy G (that’s what everyone called her but her staff called her madam). Everything was going well three weeks into my resumption until one fateful morning. I noticed that Aunty’s husband came back shortly after he and his wife left home for work. I thought he forgot something at home and had expected he would leave immediately he picked it up, but he didn’t leave. He stayed back and sat in the living room. After a while, I heard him enter their bedroom. This was the first time he would return home after leaving for work and then stay home at that time of the day since I joined them. I was worried because it was already past 8 o’clock and I should’ve been at work. There was no way I would dress up to leave the house without Uncle Fred asking me where I was going to. I was still inside my room, confused and unsure what to do when I heard a knock on my door.
“Yes, come in,” I said nervously, quickly getting up from my bed. I knew it must be Uncle Fred knocking on the door, but he rarely came to my room, so what could be the matter? Did I do something wrong?
When he came in, I was shocked at the sight before me. The man was almost naked! His tall frame and hairy chest stood before me without clothes on. The only thing he had on was his boxers. And inside it was the biggest erection I had probably ever seen! I didn’t need anyone to tell me I was in another big, big trouble!!
