My last conversation with one of Nigeria’s Originals: Adieu Pa Femi Lasode by Bimbo Esho

by Bimbo Esho

At almost 70 he craved to someday build a beautiful film village where our stories could be appreciated and continually told to the world to see. He often reminisced on how African Americans were often fascinated with words like *Osun, Orisa, Sango, *etc.

When he was schooling in America, he said his friends often told him to tell them our stories, which they believed he should ordinarily know.

He revealed to me during one of my visits to him at his Dideolu Court what inspired his interest in the Story of Sango. He said he was inspired by a popular computer game called Sango, which he stumbled on at a computer store in Manhattan, New York. He said he got fascinated with the Chinese Ninja wrestling costume, hence he felt the strong need to put our stories out there in the right perspective so that history won’t be distorted.

In the 90s, Pa Lasode’s Music Studio “*Afrika N Vogue *was a one-stop studio for musicians. He selflessly used it as a platform for young, upcoming musicians to be heard.

Pa Lasode is no doubt a creative genius whose mind easily swings from one creative activity to the other. He really invested so much in documenting history.

*Financial constraints didn’t make his greatest dream of building the Beautiful Film Village he had often reminisced about, come to light. He had so much of our history that he didn’t want to die with. On several occasions, he showed me hundreds of proposals he had written to this effect that didn’t see the light of day. * He made me realise it was not a project one man could take on.

It is quite disheartening that few of the Epic Movies which he has written to tell some of our stories may eventually become forgotten in the doldrums of history ie The Amazons of Africa ( Story between Egba’s and Dahomey), Badagry the Point of No Return, amongst others.

He sure will be remembered for documenting  the story  behind the Osun Osogbo festival, Story of Susan Wenger also known as Adunni Olorisa, his movie Sango.

He lived a relatively peaceful life in his Dideolu court before his Home call to Glory.

May Pa Lasode’s soul continue to rest in peace and may the entire Lasode family be granted the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss of one of Nigeria’s Originals.
