Highly celebrated Police Officer, CSP Dolapo Badmus is not your regular Policewoman. She is different in all ramifications. She has been able to prove to the society that a policewoman beside curbing crimes can also be very sociable and stylish. She is very good at what she does and she has used her office to speak for the voiceless and vulnerable in the society especially the female gender. She always stands out among the crowd and she’s often referred to as a celebrity cop because she maintains a very cordial relationship with lots of celebrities in the society. In this interesting interview with City People, she talks about why she chose to be different from others, why rape and domestic violence is on the increase in society. Below are the excerpts.
How do you juggle all your roles?
Let me start by saying that I see my existence as one for service. and anything that has to do with humanitarian services I jump at it not minding the challenges on the way or what it will cost me. I’m always willing and ready to attain and achieve the goal. If I don’t do that I don’t rest. When I joined the force I made up my mind that I will be a proactive police officer which simply means I won’t be waiting till an offence is committed before jumping at it for arrest. Instead, I think of what to be doing to ensure offence are not been committed. In the line of duty, I started having a passion for the youths, making sure that we are getting the youths on the right track. We hear complaints of a lot of things are not favourable to them, that’s why they often lose tracks. I want to see youths that are the pride of the nation; youths that will discuss intelligently. I want to see youths that are not addicted to drugs and rape. I want to see youths that will see crime and run away from it. I have been so committed to doing that and I think I have been bringing myself in doing much of that and at the same time my police job. So, juggling all these have not been an easy task. I will go with what the Bibles says that I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me.
What message do you have for your fans all over?
The present issue on ground is rape, sexual abuse and domestic violence. Someone just asked me before I came online that all these seem to be on the increase lately and more people are engaging in it. For crying out loud, why should you rape? We have heard of different stories and the excuse is that she was decently dressed some will say she was half-naked. For crying out loud, you see mad women on the streets, why don’t you have the urge to rape them? Sometimes, these mad women don’t even put clothes at all. I have even heard cases of babies of 2 to 3 years being defiled! What enticed you to those ones? What is bad is bad. I am presently working with stakeholders. I will be speaking to her Excellency Erelu Bisi Fayemi on my Live Chat (Instagram) tomorrow. I remembered vividly we were speaking on Omotola Jalade’s programme and someone asked if it’s only in Lagos they do so much against domestic violence and all that, but I explained that we are trying our best all over to put an end to this problem.
Why is it that rape and domestic violence is on the increase lately?
Rape has always been in existence. Women have been raped, treated as sex objects and domestically violated but the reason why the news is all over now is because the world has become a global village.
Through the connection of the internet, one can easily pick up a phone and report cases. It can easily be posted too at the snap of a finger. Everything is now in the open and people get to condemn the wicked act. Gone are the days when things like this happen and people get scared to speak out. The stigma attached to it will even discourage people from speaking out. Lots of people will rather hide their cases. So, it wasn’t as if they were not happening, it’s just that lots have learned to speak out and once you come forth to report you are fully cared and cater for. We condemn any form of violence. I for one and some stakeholders on my page tomorrow with her excellency Erelu Bisi Fayemi who is an Anti gender base advocate are been working so hard towards it. We call all hands on deck. Join us, let your children know that sexual violence is a crime don’t encourage it, frown at it, it will become a thing of the past. I don’t want to get emotional about this issue.
