While the wig trend is growing, I find it shocking that there is still an influx of anti-wig advocates throughout the world. Because of this , wig-related myths seem to be growing exponentially. No matter what myths come to troll us wig wearing enthusiasts, there is always a way around it. Let’s bust some typical wig myths in today’s article.
MYTH #1: WIGS ARE STUFFY AND THEY DON’T ALLOW
YOUR SCALP TO BREATHE
Unless your wig was made with a dome cap, proper wigs made by professionals come with the right wig caps. The construction of the wig cap is as important as the hair itself. Most importantly, the way the weft is laid contributes to overall ventilation which helps keep your head cool. One way to improve breathability is to cornrow your natural hair without brushing it back. Living in Nigeria has its fair share of heat and just keeping your hair patted down under the wig is not advisable.
MYTH #2: IT DOESN’T MATTER IF YOU WEAR
A WIG CAP.
Not only does it make a difference if you wear a wig cap underneath your wig, it is also important as to what wig cap you wear!! If you love your hair or scalp, then yes, it matters a lot. One of the best kinds to wear are the bamboo wig caps. These caps are made of a blend of bamboo viscose and spandex which makes it as soft as silk which is great for your edges and your hair. Don’t be fooled, however, because even though it is soft, it is also strong and durable. As if it couldn’t get any better, the bamboo fabric also serves as a high quality antibacterial option for cancer patients going through the chemo stage as they may be particularly sensitive to germs, etc.
MYTH #3: YOU HAVE
TO USE TAPE TO HOLD YOUR WIG AT ALL TIMES
The more wigs are worn, the more people find ways to make sure the wig stays put come wind or tornado!!! I, for one, don’t like combs as they are not kind to the scalp. A considerable measure used to ensure the wig stays still is the use of wig grip bands. These do not poke at your scalp like the combs do by any means. They also don’t make your edges run a mile into the abyss. The material grips the wig and helps it stay put. So even though people think you need glue or tape all the time, there is certainly another way.
Ladies, enjoy wearing your wigs! Before letting these myth trolls, ‘wig you out,’ know that women all over the world are living their best life with their wigs on – loud and proud. After all, we live in a world where we have the freedom to express ourselves. As a wig expert that loves wearing them, I believe wigs are here to stay. Should we declare a ‘wig day’?
