Nigeria’s wedding industry has grown into a major fashion business, and at the centre of it are designers who have turned wedding gowns into works of art. For many Nigerian brides, choosing a wedding gown is no longer simply about finding something beautiful to wear on the big day. It is about finding a designer who can understand their personality, body shape, wedding theme and dream look, and then turn all of that into one unforgettable outfit.
Over the years, several Nigerian designers have distinguished themselves through craftsmanship, creativity, celebrity clientele and the ability to create gowns that become major talking points long after the wedding. Among the biggest names today are Veekee James, Prudent Gabriel, TUBO, Mai Atafo, Deola Sagoe, Andrea Iyamah, Yemi Osunkoya of Kosibah, April by Kunbi, Imad Eduso and Elizabeth and Lace Bridal.
VEEKEE JAMES
At the top of the list is Veekee James, whose name has become almost synonymous with celebrity bridal fashion in Nigeria. She is particularly known for dramatic silhouettes, corsetry, intricate beadwork, elaborate trains and gowns that are designed to make a statement.
Her bridal process is highly personalised. The Veekee James brand says brides begin with a consultation where their style ideas, inspiration, budget and desires are discussed before measurements and sketches are produced. The ideal processing period for a bridal gown is six months, although the brand also accommodates international clients and remote fittings.
Veekee James has designed memorable wedding looks for celebrities including Mercy Chinwo, Sharon Ooja, Priscilla Ojo and Simi Sanya. She has also become a designer frequently chosen by other fashion personalities. In fact, when Prudent Gabriel got married, Veekee James created her wedding gown, a collaboration that attracted enormous attention because one celebrated designer was designing for another.
A recent example of Veekee’s continuing dominance came at the 2026 premiere of A Mama Deola Wedding Story, where Osas Ighodaro appeared in a custom Veekee James bridal couture gown featuring a structured corset, crystal and pearl embellishments, lace appliqués, a sweeping chapel-length train and a matching veil.
For many of her clients, that attention to detail is what keeps them coming back. One of the strongest sentiments surrounding the brand is that a Veekee James gown does not merely dress the bride, it creates a fashion moment. As one report on her celebrity brides put it, “being a ‘Veekee James bride’ is almost a personality trait.”
PRUDENT GABRIEL
Coming in at No. 2 is Prudent Gabriel, founder and creative director of Prudential Atelier. Prudent has built a strong reputation for refined couture, bridal gowns, traditional wedding pieces and elegant bespoke fashion. Her brand, founded in Lagos, now serves clients in Nigeria, the United Kingdom, the United States and other parts of the world.
Prudent Gabriel’s work is known for clean construction, sophisticated embellishment and designs that are carefully tailored around the woman wearing them. Her clientele has included prominent names such as Peggy Ovire and Mercy Chinwo, while her designs have continued to appear on major Nigerian fashion and entertainment stages.
Her own wedding also produced one of the most talked-about designer-to-designer moments in Nigerian fashion when Veekee James made her wedding dress. The gown was reportedly completed within hours on the wedding day, with Veekee working on the dress from around midnight. Social media users reacted with comments such as “Your hands are blessed” and “Veekeee never runs out of style.”
Prudent’s philosophy is built around individuality. The house says, “We don’t make clothes. We make the way you’ll be remembered.” It also says its clients are relationships rather than transactions, which helps explain the loyalty of women who return for other important occasions after their weddings.

TUBO
At No. 3 is TUBO, founded by Sandrah Tubobereni. The brand has established itself as one of the most recognisable names in Nigerian bridal couture, particularly among women who want something contemporary, bold and different from conventional wedding gowns.
TUBO is known for dramatic ball gowns, fitted silhouettes, sculptural designs, elaborate sleeves, modern bridal separates and gowns that combine traditional bridal romance with contemporary fashion. The brand has dressed prominent personalities including Rita Dominic, Dakore Egbuson-Akande and Ini Dima-Okojie.
One of the most interesting things about TUBO is the relationship it develops with some clients. In the case of Stephanie, her relationship with the designer began years before her wedding and eventually resulted in TUBO creating her bridal looks. The brand described the gown as something that had to be personal and intentional, saying, “It had to be personal. It had to be intentional. It had to be unmistakably Stephanie.”
That philosophy is one reason clients return. They are not simply choosing a gown from a catalogue; they are participating in the creation of something specifically connected to their story.
MAI ATAFO
At No. 4 is Mai Atafo, one of the most established names in Nigeria’s luxury fashion industry. ATAFO has built a reputation around tailoring, craftsmanship and bespoke fashion, with bridalwear forming an important part of the business. The brand’s bridal work is particularly respected for its precision, fit and sophisticated finishing.
Mai Atafo has dressed some of Nigeria’s biggest celebrities and public personalities, including Rita Dominic, Toke Makinwa and Adesua Etomi. His work has also appeared prominently at Nigerian weddings and bridal fashion events. His ability to create both feminine gowns and sharply tailored menswear gives him an advantage with couples who want a coordinated wedding wardrobe.
Clients often return to ATAFO because of the confidence that comes from working with an experienced designer. Rather than simply following a trend, the brand concentrates on fit, construction and making the client look

polished.
DEOLA SAGOE
At No. 5 is Deola Sagoe, one of the pioneers of Nigerian luxury fashion. Her name has been associated with high-end Nigerian fashion for decades, and she has built a reputation for using Nigerian fabrics, indigenous techniques and couture craftsmanship in sophisticated ways.
House of Deola is particularly known for elaborate embroidery, handwoven fabrics, intricate detailing and designs that combine Nigerian cultural heritage with international luxury. The designer has dressed personalities including former beauty queen Agbani Darego and singer Omawumi.
For brides who want their wedding gown to carry a strong cultural identity while still looking luxurious and contemporary, Deola Sagoe remains an important choice. Her longevity in the business also gives clients confidence that they are working with a designer whose understanding of couture has been developed over decades.
ANDREA IYAMAH
At No. 6 is Andrea Iyamah, founded by Nigerian-Canadian designer Dumebi Andrea Iyamah. The brand has become internationally recognised for its distinctive African-inspired aesthetic, vibrant colours, strong silhouettes and luxurious fabrics.
Although Andrea Iyamah is widely recognised for resort and ready-to-wear fashion, its bridal creations have also attracted significant attention. The designer has dressed international personalities including Michelle Obama, Kate Hudson, Gabrielle Union and Ciara, while Nigerian actress Osas Ighodaro has also worn a custom Andrea Iyamah wedding gown.
What keeps clients interested is the brand’s distinctive visual identity. An Andrea Iyamah bride can expect a gown that looks modern, feminine and recognisably different.
YEMI OSUNKOYA OF KOSIBAH
At No. 7 is Yemi Osunkoya of Kosibah. Osunkoya founded Kosibah in London in 1991 and named the brand after his mother. Over the years, he has become one of the respected names in African and international bridal couture.
Kosibah is particularly known for made-to-measure gowns, corsetry, boned bodices and silhouettes that create an elegant hourglass shape. The designer’s decades of experience have helped the brand develop an international clientele across Britain, Nigeria, the United States and beyond.
For many brides, the attraction is experience. Kosibah is not a fashion house that recently added bridalwear; bridal couture has been central to its identity for decades.
APRIL BY KUNBI
At No. 8 is April by Kunbi, founded by Olakunbi Oyelese. The brand is known for feminine, romantic and highly detailed designs, particularly lace gowns, intricate embellishment and elegant silhouettes.
April by Kunbi has dressed personalities including Stephanie Coker, Toolz Oniru and Cynthia Obi-Uchendu. Its bridal gowns appeal to women who want something romantic and sophisticated without losing the individuality of the bride.
One bride, Aramide Ogundipe, explained that she wanted a two-in-one gown rather than buying two separate dresses. “I knew I did not want two dresses, so I told her I wanted a two-in-one dress.” That ability to listen to a bride and create a practical design around her wishes is part of the attraction of the brand.
IMAD EDUSO
At No. 9 is Imad Eduso, a Lagos-based bridal label known for minimalism, clean lines and modern sophistication. Founded by Dami Olukoya, the brand has developed a distinctive identity around gowns that are elegant without being excessively decorated.
Imad Eduso’s designs have been associated with personalities including Lupita Nyong’o and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Its appeal is particularly strong among brides who want understated luxury rather than a heavily embellished princess gown.
Clients who patronise the brand often appreciate its simplicity and modern construction. For them, less is more, and the beauty comes from the cut, fabric and fit.
ELIZABETH AND LACE BRIDAL
Completing the top 10 is Elizabeth and Lace Bridal, founded by Idu Onumonu in 2016. The Lagos-based bridal house specialises in bespoke couture gowns and is known for luxurious fabrics, lace, detailed finishing and timeless silhouettes.
The brand has created gowns for prominent personalities including Toke Makinwa and Stephanie Coker. Its designs range from classic ball gowns to modern mermaid silhouettes, giving brides several interpretations of luxury bridal fashion.
What keeps customers returning is the timeless character of the designs. Rather than creating a gown that looks fashionable only for the wedding season, Elizabeth and Lace focuses on pieces that can still look beautiful when the bride revisits her wedding photographs years later.
The growth of these ten designers reflects how far Nigeria’s bridal fashion industry has come. Nigerian brides today have access to designers who can create everything from heavily beaded royal-looking gowns to simple minimalist dresses, traditional wedding pieces and dramatic couture creations.
For many women who have patronised them, the decision to return is not only about the beauty of the finished gown. It is about being listened to, receiving personal attention, getting the right fit and trusting the designer to understand how important the wedding day is. As one bridal fashion philosophy puts it, “No two women are the same. We design around your story, not the other way around.”
That perhaps explains why names such as Veekee James, Prudent Gabriel, TUBO, Mai Atafo, Deola Sagoe, Andrea Iyamah, Kosibah, April by Kunbi, Imad Eduso and Elizabeth and Lace continue to command attention. They are not simply selling wedding gowns. They are selling memories, confidence and the promise that when the bride walks down the aisle, everyone will remember what she wore.
