How Daddy Showkey Paved The Way

Before Ajegunle became famous for producing some of Nigeria’s most popular street musicians, it was simply a busy Lagos community where people worked hard, raised families and found different ways to survive.

Then music changed the story. At the centre of that story was Daddy Showkey. Born John Asiemo, Daddy Showkey grew up in Ajegunle and became one of the most recognisable faces to come out of the community. His journey from the streets of Ajegunle to national fame helped change the way Nigerians looked at the area. For many young people in Ajegunle, his success became proof that they too could make something out of their talent. Daddy Showkey did not just sing about Ajegunle. He made the community part of his identity.

His music carried the sound, language and energy of the streets. His famous Galala style became closely associated with Ajegunle and eventually became one of the sounds that defined Nigerian popular music in the 1990s. At a time when many musicians were trying to sound like established pop stars, Daddy Showkey sounded different. He sounded like the street.

His songs spoke about everyday life, hardship, love, relationships and the experiences of ordinary Nigerians. His appearance also became part of his brand. With his dreadlocks, energetic dancing and unmistakable voice, Daddy Showkey was difficult to ignore. And people paid attention.

His breakthrough opened an important door for Ajegunle. Suddenly, the community was no longer known only for its struggles. It was becoming known for talent. Other young musicians from the area began to see music as a serious career. One of the names that followed was Baba Fryo, another major Ajegunle act who became popular with his own street sound. Daddy Fresh and several other musicians also emerged from the same environment.

The success of these musicians helped create what many Nigerians came to know as the Ajegunle sound. It was loud. It was energetic. It was streetwise. And it was different from the music coming from the more established parts of Lagos. Daddy Showkey became one of its biggest ambassadors. His success also showed young musicians that they did not necessarily have to leave Ajegunle before they could be noticed. They could build from home. They could tell their own stories. They could use their environment as part of their music instead of hiding it. This was perhaps one of Daddy Showkey’s biggest contributions. He made Ajegunle commercially interesting. Record labels, music promoters and entertainment executives began looking towards the community. Young talents who might previously have been ignored were now being given opportunities.

The Ajegunle story became bigger than one man. But Daddy Showkey was one of the people who helped push the door open. His influence was not only about music. He also became a symbol of what could come out of a community that was often described only through poverty and crime. He gave Ajegunle another identity. Music. Culture. Talent. Energy. Today, when Nigerians remember the great street musicians of the 1990s, Daddy Showkey’s name remains impossible to ignore.

His Galala sound influenced a generation and helped create space for other musicians to tell their own stories. For the younger generation, it may be difficult to understand how powerful that moment was. But at the time, seeing someone from Ajegunle become a national music star was a big deal. It told thousands of young boys and girls that their postcode did not have to determine their future.

Daddy Showkey had shown them that a boy from Ajegunle could stand on a national stage and command attention. That is why his contribution to Nigerian music goes beyond his hit songs. He helped put Ajegunle on the Nigerian music map. And once that door opened, many others walked through it.

The story of Ajegunle music therefore cannot be told without Daddy Showkey. He was not the only talented musician to come from the area, but he became one of its most powerful voices. More than five decades after his birth and decades after he began his journey in music, his name remains attached to one of the most colourful chapters in Nigerian street music.

Before Ajegunle became famous for producing music stars, there was a young man from the community who showed the country what was possible. His name was Daddy Showkey. And Ajegunle has never been the same.
