Ayosunkanmi Ajasa Steps Boldly Into Nollywood Spotlight

by Jamiu Abubakar

At just 16 years old, Owolabi Ayosunkanmi Moses is already drawing admiration in Nollywood—not just for his talent on screen, but for the grace, humility, and focus that set him apart. The son of respected Yoruba actor Owolabi Ajasa, Ayosunkanmi’s journey into the entertainment world didn’t begin with auditions or acting classes. He was born into it—raised amidst scripts, sets, cameras, and legacy.

“I’ve been in the movie industry since birth,” he says with the confidence of someone who knows his purpose. “Honestly, I was born an actor.” His passion for performance, however, wasn’t forced—it was inspired. Watching his father’s consistency and charisma on screen, Ayosunkanmi naturally gravitated toward the art of storytelling through film and poetry.

Over the years, he has built a resume that many aspiring young actors would envy. He has featured in several standout Yoruba films, including Afokusoro, Agbogunleri, Iyalode Kudeti, and Segun Ogongo. But his talent isn’t limited to the screen. Ayosunkanmi is also a seasoned poet who has been reciting Ewi (Yoruba poetic performance) since his primary school days—over seven years now. His skill in poetry has earned him a spotlight at numerous events, particularly within the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN). This talent has been recognized with two prestigious awards: The Most Vibrant and Youngest Kid Actor/Poet Stage Performance for both 2023 and 2024. “These projects and awards bring me joy, recognition, and experience,” he reflects.

Being the son of a veteran might come with expectations, but Ayosunkanmi sees it more as a blessing than a burden. Rather than feeling pressure to live up to his father’s name, he sees it as a guiding light. “The biggest lessons I’ve learned from my dad are to always be humble, cheerful with people, prayerful, and to respect my seniors in the industry,” he explains. These values have become his foundation—not just in his career, but in his everyday interactions.

Despite his rising profile, Ayosunkanmi remains grounded. “People take pictures with me, give me gifts, and treat me like a celebrity at events,” he says with a smile. “Even my classmates tell me they want to join the industry because of me. But I stay humble and kind to everyone—just as I was taught.” For him, fame is not something to show off—it’s a responsibility to lead by example.

And while many young talents may struggle to find their own voice under a famous surname, Ayosunkanmi has managed to walk that tightrope effortlessly. “I’ve never felt the weight of my father’s legacy,” he says plainly. “Being humble and cheerful helps me build my own identity, while still honoring what he has achieved.”

Away from the spotlight, he returns to a world of simplicity. “When the cameras are off, I’m just a small boy with the best family ever,” he says. “My humility is what defines me beyond my career.” His words reflect a young man who understands that character lasts longer than applause.

As the Nigerian film industry evolves—embracing digital technology, global distribution, and diverse storytelling—Ayosunkanmi remains focused on staying true to his roots. “I work hard and smart to stay authentic. That’s how I keep growing while being real to myself,” he says.

Asked to describe his journey in one word, he pauses thoughtfully before replying: “Lucky.” Not out of arrogance, but appreciation. “I feel lucky to have a veteran actor as my father, and lucky to be part of a loving, supportive family. They’ve made my journey easier and meaningful.”

There’s no doubt that Owolabi Ayosunkanmi Moses is destined for greatness. But what makes his story even more remarkable is how deeply he understands the value of humility, discipline, and gratitude at such a young age. In a world eager for the next big thing, he is taking his time—growing steadily, performing excellently, and carrying the torch of a legacy with pride, not pressure.

The spotlight may have found him early, but Ayosunkanmi isn’t just basking in it—he’s building something with it. A future. A name. A voice. And if this is only the beginning, then Nollywood should be ready for something truly special.
