Popular Yoruba Activist, SUNDAY IGBOHO
Popular Yoruba activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, who is generally known as Sunday Igboho, has been talking, granting interviews since he came back from Germany. He was detained and later set free in Benin Republic before he travelled from there to Germany. He is back home to bury his mother who died while he was in detention.
Igboho narrated how she died and how her death set him free from prison in Benin. Igboho also said the people of the South-West must liberate themselves from the killer herdsmen who are terrorising them.
Recall that in July 2021, Igboho was arrested alongside his wife, Ropo, in Cotonou, Benin Republic, and detained at the request of the Nigerian government. Below is the story of how he was released. “I heard so many prophecies from the men of God that I shouldn’t come back to Nigeria to bury my mother. But my Pastor, Pastor Kayode told me to come home, that nothing would happen. When they came to destroy my properties, they burnt my house, vandalised my cars. But I thank God I am alive because I met some of those things here on earth. I met my wife here on earth”.
“When they set the first house on fire, I wasn’t angry. That never bothered me. My own is to fight for common people and be remembered in history for good. I urge the government to set the remaining on fire, and I won’t get angry.
I have children across the world. When they see those houses, they joke about it. One even told me to allow him take one of the cars, so he can be cruising it around. To me, a good name is better than common property. So I urge everyone to build good name for themselves.
We should not abuse our Kabiesi any longer. I’ve done it before but I had to call myself to order. We shouldn’t abuse anybody again. It’s Buhari who gave them instruction to go and kill me. Some of these Yoruba elders didn’t intervene. I thank my Kabiesi of Igboho. I thank Kabiesi Olupoti of Ipoti land. Although he conferred on me the Akinrogun of Ipoti land in Ekiti. It is about 10 years now he made me Akinrogun of Ipoti land etc”.
“I don’t know what the other prophets saw when they said I should not come home to bury my mother. My mother died thinking of me and I told God I would like to go and bury her. I vowed and I said if there is anyone who can turn himself to snake or any animal, I asked God not to let the person turn back to human being. Any person from the government saying I should not bury my mother, God should cancel them before my arrival. And God let it work out for me. He spared my life to bury my mother because my mother was a true mother”.
“I wish I could see my mother before her death but God is the one who owns her. It’s not witches or wizards that kill. You don’t have the power to kill if the time of the person has not come. If someone dies through another person, God knows about it. Nobody killed my mother. She called me herself. She said Adisa! I said yes! She asked what was delaying me in Benin (Cotonou)? I answered her I don’t understand too. But you said if Tinubu emerges president, you will come back. Because the fight is between you and Buhari. Now that Tinubu has emerged and he’s a Yoruba man, if you come home and he kills you, history won’t forget him. The history of Awolowo and Akintola is still fresh. I said it’s true. She said come back home! And I said even the Government of Benin Republic hasn’t released me. She said, do you have anyone you can meet to set you free? I said I have no one. She now said, I will go and meet God on your behalf. The following day, my mum called me that she had constipation. My mum never told me she was sick before. When she told me about her constipation, I now asked my immediate sister Bola to go and check her at home. So immediately she went there with her husband to take her to hospital. I said to my mum, you scared me now. I also asked for the amount of drugs they prescribed for her. I sent her money for it immediately. So, the following morning I was expecting her call because she usually calls me very early in the morning. She was happy because I used to call her my mom. She said, our firstborn will say Iya Sunday, the second born also call her Iya Sunday. So when I didn’t see her call, I called Bola. She told me immediately that they were in hospital all through the night and my mother couldn’t even talk again. I said she wanted to see me. I said please give her the phone even if she can’t speak. So I asked to speak with the doctor. I told him nothing must happen to her. He promised it was just stomach pain and she would get better. I said is it not because of me you are sick? She nods her head. I told her I would be coming home immediately, so please cheer up. So I called our firstborn (my sister), I asked her if she was with her already. She said they were taking her to LAUTECH. I was calling them every five-five minutes to check on her. When they arrived Ogbomoso. They were looking at LAUTECH when my young sister called and she was crying. I told her to give the phone to my mom or give my sister. I asked my sister what happened, she said my mother was dead. I said you don’t know what you are saying. I said please pass the phone to my other sister (sister Alice). She also said she was dead. I said she can’t die like that. So I called our brother who is a doctor. He assured me that she can’t die. So when they got to his place, he confirmed her death to me. So I realized that no one killed her. The third day I was released in Benin prison. The president of Benin Patrice Talon asked to call me and he said he saw my mother had died”…
