In The Seasoning Sector
For decades, the Nigerian seasoning market has largely been associated with two dominant names, Maggi and Knorr. Maggi, produced by Nestlé Nigeria, entered the Nigerian market in 1966 and helped establish seasoning cubes as an important part of everyday cooking. Knorr later became another major force, particularly after Unilever Nigeria acquired the brand from Cadbury Nigeria in 2005. But the seasoning battle has changed in recent years, with newer brands fighting for a share of the huge Nigerian kitchen market. One of the brands increasingly drawing attention is Terra, particularly its Terra Gold seasoning cube.
Terra entered the Nigerian seasoning market in 2019 through TGI Distri, part of Tropical General Investments Group. At its launch, the company introduced Beef and Chicken variants, with the stated objective of providing seasoning that matched the taste and cooking preferences of Nigerian consumers. The company said its research and product testing showed encouraging responses from early users.
The brand’s journey from 2019 to the launch of Terra Gold in January 2024 shows how it has tried to move beyond simply being another seasoning cube. Terra Gold was introduced as a more versatile product, designed not to impose a particular flavour on food but to enhance the natural taste of different meals.
Unlike traditional cubes that are strongly associated with particular flavours, Terra Gold was marketed as a neutral seasoning that could be used in soups, stews, Jollof rice and other Nigerian and international dishes. TGI described it as a cube that offers “endless possibilities” without limiting consumers to one particular flavour profile.
That flexibility is at the heart of Terra Gold’s battle for consumers. Rather than asking a household to buy different cubes for different meals, the brand’s “One Cube, Endless Possibilities” campaign presents Terra Gold as an all-purpose option. The company has continued to expand the Terra seasoning range, with products including Beef, Chicken, Jollof and Shrimp variants, while its wider seasoning portfolio has also grown.
The brand’s growth has also been supported by distribution and retail availability. TGI Distri handles sales and distribution of several of the group’s food and non-food products, including Terra Seasoning Cube. The brand is now sold through physical retail outlets and online channels, with current online listings showing Terra Gold in different pack sizes.
For retailers, the attraction of a seasoning product is not just its taste but whether consumers repeatedly ask for it. Terra Gold’s increasing visibility has therefore placed it in direct competition with established names. The Nigerian seasoning market remains highly competitive, with newer products taking portions of a market where consumers are increasingly looking for quality, authenticity and value.
Consumers have also been speaking about the product. University student Osho Glory said Terra Gold helped her when she could not afford to buy every ingredient required for cooking. “With Terra Gold Cube, I get the flavour, taste, and aroma I desire,” she said.
Another consumer, Aisha Ibrahim, highlighted its versatility, saying, “Regardless of what you are cooking, Terra Gold Cube makes its taste and aroma so much better.”
The company sees that versatility as one of its biggest weapons against the established brands. TGI Group’s Chief Marketing Officer, Probal Bhattacharya, said, “We understand how dynamic the Nigerian Culinary space is and our role is to empower consumers with the right seasoning for all their dishes, whether local or international.”
Since Terra’s entry in 2019, the brand has moved from two initial variants to a broader portfolio, while Terra Gold itself has been positioned as a major innovation since its 2024 launch. In 2025, Terra Gold received the ADVAN Brand Innovation of the Year award, another indication of the attention it has attracted in the market.
There is, however, no reliable publicly disclosed figure showing Terra’s exact national market share from 2019 to 2026, so claims of a specific percentage increase would be misleading. What can be established is that the brand has survived for seven years, expanded its product range and distribution, and introduced Terra Gold as a direct attempt to compete for consumers who have traditionally relied on Maggi, Knorr and other established seasoning brands.
The battle is therefore no longer simply between Maggi and Knorr. With Terra Gold pushing the idea of one cube for virtually every meal, Terra is attempting to turn its relatively young presence into a lasting position in Nigerian kitchens. Its biggest challenge remains convincing millions of consumers who have grown up with Maggi and Knorr to change their habits, but its expanding range, distribution and aggressive positioning show that Terra is prepared to stay in the fight.
